Website re-design for a global tech company

Akamai Technologies, headquartered in Cambridge, MA, needed a facelift for their decade-old website to better serve customers across 135+ countries.

Project plan

Redesign a global tech company's website to drive conversions and generate high-quality inbound leads by improving the user experience

Challenges

  • No web/digital visual brand guidelines exist
  • Stakeholders who are not digital-savvy have strong opinions
  • Limited resources and tight timelines – no time for user research
  • All pages need to be translated into multiple languages, each of which may have varying text lengths
  • Lack of templated modules that international sales teams and vendors can easily use for quick page creation

My role

  • Carefully review and approve the wireframes provided by the vendor, then redesign all UI and visual elements of the page based on them
  • Optimize the brand library for web and digital use, ensuring compliance with WCAG AA standards
  • Conduct competitive research
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for communication with developers

Old design

  • Not responsive
  • No streamlined design guidance resulted in inconsistency across the site
  • Busy and outdated
  • Low accessibility

First step : Optimize branding elements

The site used too many colors and typefaces, so we streamlined both for greater consistency.

Second step : Configure modular elements

We implemented a modular card system with multiple variations for use in different contexts. This approach helps make the content more scannable and easier to organize, especially given the site’s information density. Additionally, it allows third-party vendors to independently create pages while upholding a consistent design standard.

Final Solutions

  • Reduction in bounce rate of +10% over the first 6 months of launch
  • Increased engagement on key products and solution pages increased by 23%
  • Quality of leads increased by 6%
  • Improved web accessibility to be compatible with WCAG Level AA standards
  • Modular design that can be easily used across all departments and vendors

Takeaway

  • We consolidated Akamai's properties into a single content management system (AEM) and streamlined the design to ensure consistent user experience across the site, while also simplifying page creation for sales teams and vendors.
  • Due to time constraints, we were unable to conduct user research, so we focused on competitive research and ensured all elements met WCAG AA standards.
  • Components were carefully designed to accommodate longer copy in non-English languages.

Showcase #1: Product Page

We asked each Product team to organize their information for clarity and conciseness, as the previous page was overloaded and lacked hierarchy. We added spacing between sections for easier navigation and used card components to improve structure and readability. The page was also designed to meet WCAG AA accessibility standards.

Showcase #2: Product listing page

We introduced a color-coded filter system to distinguish product pillars. Users can toggle one or more filters to display products based on their preferences.

Showcase #3: "Why choose us?" page

We replaced text-heavy descriptions with visual data, simplifying complex information into clear statistics, icons, and an interactive map featuring specific data points.
