Website re-design for a global tech company

Akamai Technologies, headquartered in Cambridge, MA, needed a facelift for their decade-old website to better serve customers across 135+ countries.

Project plan

Redesign a global tech company's website to improve visuals, user experience, and accessibility.

Challenges

  • Web/digital visual brand guidances don't exist
  • All the pages will need to be translated into multiple languages, each of which may have varying lengths of text
  • Limited resource and tight timelines – No time for user research
  • Stakeholders who are not digital-savvy with strong opinions
  • Lack of templated modules that international sales teams and vendors can easily use for a quick page creation

Old design

  • Busy and outdated
  • Tons of information squeezed into one page
  • No design guidances resulted in inconsistency across the site
  • Low accessibility

First step : Optimize branding elements

The site used too many colors and typefaces, so we streamlined both for greater consistency.

Roboto font family

Second step : Configure modular elements

We implemented a modular card system with multiple variations for use in different contexts. This approach helps make the content more scannable and easier to organize, especially given the site’s information density. Additionally, it allows third-party vendors to independently create pages while upholding a consistent design standard.

Final Solutions

  • Modular design that can be easily used across all departments and vendors
  • Color palette and typography optimized for web uses
  • Improved web accessibility
  • A modern and "young" design, to compete with emerging players in the market
